After the ElectionSamsara, the wheel of becoming, never fails to astonish me with it’s wild twists and turns. It looked like a more peaceful world, a more intelligent, inspiring, inclusive political presence in the United States was within our grasp. Now it looks like a pre-nazi era, where whole segments of our population here in America are to be held in question, demonized. Reports of an increase in bullying, hate groups feeling acknowledged now coming out of the woodwork to celebrate, seeing possible political appointments of hate-mongers…..goodness, it’s a lot to digest.
At the same time, all over the planet we have movements of populations declaring their commitment to peace. I have received wonderful, inspiring, uplifting words, music and video celebrating the human spirit.
I have been asked by many people what is my take, what words of advice do I have.
1. Breathe. Let go of tension, physical, emotional, mental

2. Meet the moment with wisdom and compassion.

3. Stay open to the magic and miracle of life…anything can happen.

4. Examine your own prejudices and disarm them

5. Send love and light into the world with every breath

6. Count your blessings and cultivate a constant and deep sense of gratitude

7. Work with your sources of refuge, teachers and community to develop ways to disarm any prejudice, unkindness, violence in the people around you.

8. Remember, it is all impermanent and we have no idea the ultimate significance of things

9. Above all stay in the heart of love.

10. Develop creative ways of working with the violent people in our world, to help them to disarm their prejudices. Look how far we have come, how many have been converted to opening their heart. Keep on, keeping on.

Here are some of the things that have inspired me during this time of transition

After the Election: Buddhist Wisdom for Hope and Healing

President Barack Obama told his teenage daughters to “constantly affirm and lift up and fight” following the election of Donald Trump to the presidency last week. “People are complicated, societies and cultures are really complicated. . . . This is not mathematics; this is biology and chemistry. These are living organisms, and it’s messy. And your job as a citizen and as a decent human being is to constantly affirm and lift up and fight for treating people with kindness and respect and understanding. And you should anticipate that at any given moment there’s going to be flare-ups of bigotry that you may have to confront, or may be inside you and you have to vanquish. And it doesn’t stop. . . . You don’t get into a fetal position about it. You don’t start worrying about apocalypse. You say, O.K., where are the places where I can push to keep it moving forward.”

Good advice. Keep on moving forward. Cultivate the virtues. And continue to affirm the power of love. Create magic with your loving heart. We can do this.

Our digestive system has been argued to be the most important body system; as it is intimately connected to all the others, especially our immune and cardiovascular systems. Our digestive system is certainly the one we have the most direct control of; as in “you are what you eat.”In addition to providing nourishment, our digestive system has a second function, to detoxify the body. You don’t have to wait until after New Years to begin your detox program! Let us introduce you to the age old concept of the daily fast. Simply allow 14 hours between the last meal of the day until “Breakfast!” Nourishing, hydrating, and sanitizing liquids go directly into the blood stream; so can be included during your fasting hours.

During your 10 hours a day of eating solid food, avoid “non-nutritives;” since your body still has to work to digest foods that contain no nutrition! Please don’t overeat! Ingesting unhealthy food and overeating both cause structural and functional disease. Eat moderate portions of a variety of healthy foods at moderate intervals! Chew your food well and enjoy!
